How a Smart Workplace Can Provide a Competitive Advantage

Today's employees want mobile access to everything—all the time—no matter where they are. Employers are tasked to attract Millennials and Gen Z workers—or #genmobile—while simultaneously retaining experienced employees. Allowing employees remote access, BYOD, and flexible work environments can increase productivity and provide savings in utility and operating costs. Workspaces that cater to different personalities allows employees to flourish and be productive. As a result, companies are altering their work environments from cube farms to balanced work spaces. They’re providing sit-to-stand desks, treadmills with built in notebooks, open work space, and quiet zones.

Recently I attended Aruba Atmosphere. One of the talking points was the importance of smart digital workplaces and the marrying of user experience with IoT. Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company, is collaborating with multiple partners to support smart workplaces. The idea of being able to customize a work space is extremely appealing. Imagine having a smart desk that would allow you to adjust lighting and temperature, or remind you to get up and move if you’ve been sitting for too long.

On that note, there are now apps that pair with any connected desk. Working together, the app and furnishings remind people when it’s time to change postures and gradually help individuals achieve activity goals. Their dashboards offer insights that help control operational costs, improve space utilization, and enhance employee wellbeing.

As the workplace continues to evolve, and employee expectations shift, organizations that do not embrace the digital workplace risk falling behind. Offering your employees a customizable work space or mobile work options can be a differentiator that sets you apart from the competition. All of this cannot be possible without a network that supports mobile-first user experiences and secure IOT. Aruba’s mobile-first architecture moves the network beyond the traditional role of connectivity—it now becomes a key component of an overall application and technology platform to create next-generation workplace experiences.
